Movie Day on Tuesday!

Gnomeo & Juliet will be shown on the big screen in the Library basement for Tuesday’s elementary program.

Garden gnomes Gnomeo and Juliet have as many obstacles to overcome as their quasi namesakes when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors. But with plastic pink flamingos and lawnmower races in the mix, can this young couple find lasting happiness? Written by Walt Disney Pictures

Walmart of West Newton: The 1870’s General Store

What kinds of things would Laura Ingalls Wilder have seen in her local general store while growing up? How much did stuff cost? How did people pay for items? An 1870’s store was quite different from the Walmart of today! Come learn how!

Presenter: Ruth Grewe from Nicollet County Historical Society. Free program geared to elementary-age children.

The Rose Ensemble: The Last Queen of Hawai’i

Our last summer program for elementary aged children took place on Tuesday, July 27, 2010 when we enjoyed the exquisite talent of the Internationally renowned Rose Ensemble! Their educational and entertaining program “The Last Queen of Hawai’i” brought to life the incredibly varied music and dance traditions of the islands through beautiful voice, ukulele, gourd drums, and hula.

We owe this exciting trip down the path of Hawaiian culture through centuries of music, movement, and storytelling to funding received from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage fund.  This fund is the result of the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008 which dedicated funds to preserve Minnesota’s arts and cultural heritage.

Our Tuesday programs each summer are geared to middle to upper elementary youth.  Our Friday programs are geared to preschool to early elementary youth.  Attendance at our programs has been fantastic!!  Thanks for making our Summer Reading Program such a success!

Don’t forget … there is still one more summer storytime on this Friday, July 30th at 9:30am.

An eagle in the Library!

Our Elementary Program for Tuesday, July 20th featured Harriet (a bald eagle) and her handler from the National Eagle Center.  It was a fascinating presentation!  Did you know that an eagle can exert up to 400 lbs. pressure with each of its talons?  Did you know that it can dive for prey at 100 miles an hour?  We learned these and so many other incredibly interesting things about our beautiful and amazing national bird!

We thank the Chosen Valley Community Foundation for making this program possible through a generous grant.
